Abstract:

A lot of LWD and MWD tools with azimuthal measurement capabilities have the problem that the position and location of the test is important for the test result and the position and azimuthal sensors have to be calibrated. For example the quality of the Airhang calibration for the Extra Deep Azimuthal Resistivity (EDAR) depends on the correct tool orientation (Tool Face up) and the accuracy of the height measurement.

A measurement device mounted on the tool body and connected to the tool internal communication bus (ADAM) could be used to accomplish this challenge. This measurement device should contain sensors to measure the 3 earth magnetic field components (Bx, By, Bz), the acceleration in 3 axes (X, Y, Z), and the distance to a certain point (e.g. height over ground or water). Additional to that the device should have a GPS to determine the position. Because the data are available on the same interface as the tool a computer program can use the data to process the measurement results from the tool.
