Abstract

The present invention proposes a technique for efficient transport of a neo-natal in an ambulance to a hospital in an incubator. The technique includes an incubator, which runs without a dedicated external power source. The incubator is utilized to transport the neo-natal to the hospital. The incubator utilizes waste heat from exhaust system of the ambulance or vehicle. A fresh gas sample is heated utilizing a heat exchanger and supplied to the incubator chamber. Thermostats are placed inside the chamber to control the temperature. The incubator, which is a transportable incubator or warmer, substantially reduces preventable deaths due to hypothermia during transportation. The incubator is installed in the ambulance with some customization while facilitating the detachability. The incubator includes a self-reliant power source, which reduces the operating expense.

FIELD OF INVENTION

The invention generally relates to an incubator and more particularly to a transportable one with a self-reliant power source.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Infant mortality is an index of level of socio-economic development and quality of life for a country. In developing nations, rural areas have high infant mortality rate. Hospitals in urban areas are equipped with incubators whereas clinics in the rural areas lack such facilities. Rural areas have problems due to power cuts and handling equipment by inexperienced personnel. Death during transportation is a prominent and consistent factor of infant mortality rates among other factors.


A conventional technique includes cotton baby wraps to warm babies. However, this technique is ineffective due to unhygienic and filthy conditions.

Another conventional technique includes a system of oval shaped infant housing utilizing double wall construction with an air space between to be supported on a cradle suspension system.

Another conventional technique includes an incubator with a constant ambient temperature with thermally insulated from all sides for transporting babies.

Yet another conventional technique includes a portable baby incubator, which is utilized in handling premature born infants.

However, these conventional techniques require separate power supply for the incubator.

It would be desirable to have an efficient technique that provides an incubator with self-reliant power supply.
