In this paper we disclose a smart plug with a metering function.  The smart plug can calculate active power/reactive power.  The smart plug also has a reactive power compensation function.

Reactive power is not welcomed by electricity providers.  Reactive power is already being charged for in some countries such as the UK, and charging for reactive power is a trend, even in China with such a function, the utility bill will be reduced.  Smart plugs can measure the amount of electricity being used, even when a device is turned off.  However, current smart plugs do not have a reactive power compensation function.  In this paper we propose a smart plug with a reactive power compensation function.

The majority of electrical appliances are inductive load, which costs additional reactive power.  Reactive power is already charged in some countries such as UK and charging for reactive power is a trend in the electricity market.  Reactive power compensation will be able to reduce electricity usage, which is good for consumers and the environment. 

            Figure 1 shows a smart plug including acapacitor switching circuit that allows for real-time monitoring of power consumption.  Then, based on reactive power, the capacitor may be switched on/off.  A cost effective thyristor circuit is used to switch the AC capacitor on/off.  The number and value of the capacitor switched by the thyristor will vary depending on the capacity of the compensated reactive power.  When the AC capacitor is swi...
