Abstract

A method and system is disclosed for signaling mild cognitive impairment of a vehicle operator by detecting a vehicle operator's reaction time. The method and system recognizes a specific situation such as a stimulus in an environment and measures the vehicle operator's reaction time to the stimulus. Thereafter, the method and system performs an analysis to detect mild cognitive impairment decline of the vehicle operator. The method and system further signals the vehicle operator if a potential stimulus is detected.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can cause a noticeable decline in cognitive abilities, including memory and thinking skills. There are many existing methods for measuring cognitive impairment that utilize reaction time. However, the patients are required to travel to hospital since the tests require trained professionals to operate . The tests cannot operate continuously and clinical monitoring of the patient all day is important . Further, the trained professionals may not know the reaction time in real -time as the reaction time is computed based on lab stimuli of the patient .

Disclosed is a method and system for signaling mild cognitive impairment of a vehicle operator by detecting a vehicle operator's reaction time. The method and system recognizes a specific situation such as a stimulus in an environment and measures the vehicle operator's reaction time to the stimulus. For example, the stimulus can be one or more of, but not limited to, a directive, a traffic sign, a problematic event, an accident, an object in the road, an object at the side of the road, or another vehicle within the proximity of the vehicle or a noise inside the vehicle. Thereafter, the method and system performs an analysis to detect mild cognitive impairment decline of the vehicle operator. The method and system further signals the vehicle operator if a potential stimulus is detected.

The system includes a vehicle operator detection module and a sensor integrator module. The vehicle operator detection module monitors the driver of the vehicle . For example, the vehicle operator detection module detects weight of the driver , facial recognition, voice recognition, or inputting a driver-specific code into an onboard computer. Generally, components within the vehicle include vehicle sensors which are connected to one or more electronic control units (ECUs). The one or more ECUs control an electrical system in the vehicle. Types of ECU include engine control module (ECM), powertrain control module (PCM), transmission control module (TCM), brake control module (BCM or EBCM), central control module (CCM), central timing module (CTM), general electronic module (GEM), body control module (BCM), suspension control module (SCM), control unit, or control module. The sensor integrator module receives data from the various ECUs and correlates the data into 100 milliseconds chunks of time to generate a summary data for every few seconds . The sensor integrator module also integrates data from the vehicle sensors include a proximity sensor, a brake pedal sensor, a global positioning system (GPS) sensor, and a vehicle speed sensor.
