Touchless payment systems are a convenient method for quick payment, but present potential problems, which can be costly for the cardholder.

Because the cards are usually implemented with simple passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) devices, the potential exists for payments to be unintentionally triggered if the card is too close to a reader when the cardholder is not making a purchase (e.g., a person waiting in line at the checkout places a purse or wallet containing the card on the counter).

Another concern for these devices is the potential for RFID snooping. Sophisticated transmitters have been developed that can communicate with these cards over significant distances, even though the cards are only supposed to be active within a few inches. These transmitters can be patched into a payment system to initiate a fraudulent charge.

The invention is a small touch target that is added to the card to prevent the card's activation unless the cardholder is pressing the target with a thumb or finger. This ensures that any transaction initiated with the card is intentional.
