Prior to traveling, people research a new destination for suitable time ranges to stay there, activities, places of interest, weather, cost, transportation and many other factors. This can be a laborious and time-consuming task. Traditional travel sites present users with static travel packages or search criteria options for a given travel destination (e.g., hotels, restaurants, etc.).

A system or method is needed to simplify the process, include information found on social media, and provide dynamic search results.

The novel contribution is a method and system that allow users to perform searches about a travel destination based on given time-periods and preferences, as well as social network contributions of other travelers and the associated sentiment analysis. The system offers the novel ability to capture media contents, extract meta data for a given location, time, and publisher, and then determine the duration of stay for a given location within standard deviation, which is plotted to an electronic travel map. Users can search for travel destinations for given date range and filter the search results using weighted ranking criteria preferences (e.g., weather, activities, transportation, distance of travel, budget, etc.). The system presents the user with a visual electronic travel map with recommendations for destination locations. Input from social media assists the user in making decisions to zoom in on the map and find common places of interest in a particular location.

The system includes a remote map server with software installed. The software performs the following:

1. Search and aggregate published media contents in the public domain 2. Extract meta data from media contents gathered (e.g., date of capture, location of capture, user who published)

3. Identify users mobility pattern used to determine when traveling, duration for given location


4. Analysis of meta data to determine location, time


5. Plot analysis data on electronic map and make available for search

For implementation, the system requires a mobile device with location aware services and a searchable electronic travel map.
