Abstract

This article proposes a new method and system to make user fill web forms on mobile devices more easily and user-friendly. The web forms in this article are transformed to message flows before they are sent to mobile devices. The message flows then are transferred to mobile device so that user can fill all required fields just like instant message chatting with somebody. At the same time, all messages are cached locally and at server to promote performance and support user to review history data. Mobile users would be much happier to fill web forms via this method than tranditional web forms fillings.

It is very common to let user fill web forms and transfer the data gathered from user to backend server to process for general web applications or running business processes. The current web forms are generally based on HTML and itsdynamic script such as java script etc. User need to run the HTML document he received from the server in his browser or specific applications and fill the required fields in the generated web form, then submit the web form to the server. With more and more common use of mobile devices, filling web forms on mobile is becoming widespread requirements. However, the typical web form filling method mentioned above is not suitable to mobile because of mobile's specialties. I believe everyone hate to fill any web forms on mobile because its difficulties. The following list some points that cause troubles or bad experiences for mobile devices users to fill a web form

Mobile devices always have only limited bandwidth compared with wired network. Complex web forms typically consume large bandwidth and are very slow to be loaded on mobile.

The following are known solutions to deal with bad user experiences on filling web forms on mobile devices.

The screen size of mobile is much smaller than thatof desktop. It is difficult for mobile users to go through the web forms and

find the required fields to fill like desktop.

Mobile devices are generally using screen touch to locate positions on its screen. It is not easy for mobile users to locate a small field when filling

                                                                           For large web form, it can use several views to display. One view is displayed on mobile screen at one time. User can switch one view to another by using mobile specific input style, such as touch and slip. The drawbacks for this method are: bandwidth problem is not resolved. Although the web form can be shown in different mobile style views, users still need to position each field in the view and input values. The experience problems are still not finally resolved. Every web forms have to be redesigned and developed and backend

server has to differentiate if the request comes from mobile or not.

Divide a large web form to different small web forms at the server side. Mobile users need to fill small parts one by one and submit them finally. This solution can resolve the problem to show a large web form on mobiles and can also resolve the limited bandwidth problem partially. But it also requires all the existing web forms are redesigned specially for mobile devices and provide additional mobile access path parallel with existing system. User still need to fill the web forms although it is small and the size is applicable for mobiles.
