Abstract

The present invention proposes a technique for a loop check activity to ensure loop integrity in an industry. The technique includes automatic input/output loop check and provides a detailed loop check report to a user. Loop check report allows the user to determine and correct the issues easily. Implementation of automatic loop check requires a loop check controller module, toolbox configurations, a loop check software code and a modified junction box. The detachable loop check module is mounted on the modified junction box, which is coupled with a control system.

BACKGROUND

The present invention relates generally to a loop check and more particularly to an automatic input/output loop check activity to ensure loop integrity.

Loop check generally is a time consuming activity during commissioning of control systems in an industry. The loop check is a labor-intensive activity and takes several weeks to ensure loop integrity. During loop check activity, loop field instruments to control a system are roughly checked for cable breakage or continuity. This ensures all inputs and outputs are landed in appropriate terminal boards.

A conventional technique includes an apparatus for automatic testing of integrity of an inductive loop in a vehicle detector system. Another conventional technique includes a system for verifying integrity of each one of a number of communication paths in a telephone network. However, these conventional techniques are time consuming during commissioning of control systems in an industry.

It would be desirable to have an efficient technique for loop check to ensure loop integrity.

DETAIL DESCRIPTION

The present invention proposes a technique for a loop check activity to ensure loop integrity in an industry. The technique includes an automatic input/output loop check and provides a detailed loop check report to a user. Loop check report allows the user to identify and correct the issues easily. Implementation of the automatic loop check technique described herein comprises a loop check controller module, toolbox configurations, a loop check software code

and a modified junction box (JB). The detachable loop check module is mounted on the modified junction box, which is coupled with a control system. Loop check is initiated from the toolbox after downloading the loop check software from the controller module. The loop controller shorts the inputs and injects voltage or current. This is based on the type of input/output the user is checking. Once checking is complete toolbox generates a report showing in which channel check is failed. The loop controller is a pluggable device, so same device may be utilized for multiple JBs. Figure 1 depicts components for implementation of the automatic loop check.
