Performance Improvement of Write Operations in Geographic Logical Volume Manager Geographic Logical Volume Manager ( GLVM ) provides facility to mirror the data in a logical Volume (LV ) extended across geograhically separated sites.

In cases where more than one mirror pool exists on the remote site, IO write commands are sent to these mirror pools over the network.
[ typically via a TCP socket connection ]

Same data has to be sent over the network multiple times wasting Network bandwidth.

A typical usage scenario to highlight the problem :

A group of disks from local and remote site form a Volume Group( VG ) which is divided into 3 mirror pools (MP ).

Users define two mirror pools locally [ Production Site ] and and one on remote site [ Disaster Recovery Site ]

Upon failure of Production Site , the Disaster Recovery Site comes up and workload starts running on it.

Even after Production Site comes back after failure , Fallback is typically delayed due to business requirements and scheduling a maintainence window.

In this scenario, the Disaster Recovery Site has to send separate IOs for each Mirror Pool on the Production Site ,
and same data is sent twice over the network wasting network bandwidth.

This solution addresses this problem and provides a method to reduce number of IOs sent over the network to the remote Mirror Pools.

The proposed method envisages sending the data that needs to be written to multiple remote Mirror Pools over the network only once.
