A method of making a metal panel assembly (e.g. a hem flange) by using a structural adhesive film is described. Especially how a structural adhesive film should be applied to the metal parts during the method of making the metal assembly is disclosed.

Vehicle closure panels typically comprise an assembly of an outer and an inner metal panel whereby a hem structure is formed by folding an edge of an outer panel over an edge of the inner panel. Typically an adhesive is provided there between to bond the panels together. Further, a sealant typically needs to be applied at the joint of the metal panels to provide for sufficient corrosion resistance.

The metal panel assembly according to the disclosure provides an inner panel and an outer panel. The two panels are positioned next to each other. A structural adhesive film or sheet is first applied to the surface of the inner panel that does not face the outer panel and is then folded around the edge of the inner panel.

The disclosure provides an alternative solution to solutions described in the following patent applications WO 2014/37392 A1, WO 2014/37398 A1 and WO 2014/37400 A1.

Additional solutions are described for example in US 6,000,118, which discloses the use of a flowable sealant bead between facing surface of the two panels, and a thin film of uncured paint-like resin between a flange on the outer panel and the exposed surface of the inner panel. US 6,368 008 discloses the use of an adhesive for securing two metal panels together. The edge of the joint is sealed by an additional metal coating. DE 10 2008 060 930 A1 discloses the method for making a hem flange structure by using of a "knetbarer Streifenkleber". This document does only disclose to apply the "Streifenkleber" on both sides of the inner panel, such that it surrounds the edge. It does not disclose that the "Streifenkleber" needs to be u-shaped in order to fulfill that requirement.
