Method and System for Using a Disaster Recovery Orchestrator to Automate Disaster Recovery in Virtual Environments

Disaster recovery is a critical feature for IT platforms and services . Many operations are involved in a disaster recovery process, for example, replication, provisioning, restart, configuration of certain VMs, query of database, and report to portal/GUI, generate/process ticket. The operations possess inter-dependency and orders such as recovery order, configuration after restart. There may be specific requirements and stringent time requirement for disaster recovery on individual machines . Therefore, it is essential to automate disaster recovery process, handle complicated inter-dependency and orders.

Disclosed is a method and system for using a disaster recovery orchestrator to automate Disaster Recovery (DR) in virtual environments. The method and system provides a Disaster Recovery Orchestrator (DRO) component that is in charge of DR process. The DRO resides in both a primary site and a DR site. The DRO also drives a number of DR functions/capabilities in both failover and failback scenarios as illustrated in figure 1.

The DR process is illustrated in figure 2.
