4. Some Problems Solved

Examples of some of the problems addressed by the invention include:

People have different preferences in the feel of their keyboards. Some prefer a crisper, higher force feel, while some prefer a mellower, lower force feel. For example, mechanical keyboard manufacturers have been successful selling key switches of different characteristics to meet this need, ranging from the light mechanical switches, which provide 45 g force, to heavy mechanical switches, which provide 60g force. The invention described herein allows users to tune the keyboard feel of keyboard to meet their own personal preference.

Additionally, an adjustable force keyboard allows the keyboard manufacturer to adjust force post- manufacturing to allow sale and use of keyboards that may have otherwise been discarded for failure to meet certain specifications.


5. General Description

As described herein, a magnetic keyboard mechanism generates key press force by utilizing a magnet in the cap of a key, which is attracted to a piece of metal or magnet that is attached to the frame of the keyboard. The attraction between these two is what pulls the keycap back up after it has been pressed.

There are several approaches to controlling the attraction force between the key magnet and frame metal or magnet. For simplicity, the frame element will be referred to as a metal attractor. These include the following architectures:

1) Vary the area overlap between the magnet and the metal clip. This is a promising approach as it uses a simple sliding motion of the metal attractor attached to the keyboard frame. All of the metal attractors for each key are forged out a single part - meaning that users would only need to move a single part for force control.
