Abstract

This disclosure describes a system and method for perforating a well and then performing stack packs with either a single or multi-zone frac system. The benefits are the time savings by not having to perform multiple cleanup runs as well allowing a more effective stimulation by limiting the amount of concentric worksting in a multi-zone application

The basic procedure, regardless of single/multi-zone completions would be to perforate the entire gross interval to be completed. Then an assembly consisting of a low pressure big bore retrievable packer, blank pipe and then the lower completion (single or multi-zone) is run and set in place. Where the big bore packer and blank pipe have ID’s larger than the lower completion ID. The purpose of the upper packer and blank pipe is simply to isolate the perforations while performing the frac pack operation. By utilizing an assembly with an ID larger than the lower completion enables a tapered concentric worksting. This work string will reduce the pressure drop and allow a higher stimulation rate to be achieved given a constant surface treating pressure, which will allow for a more effective stimulation. After the lower zone(s) have been completed the upper isolation assembly (packer and blank pipe) will be retrieved, either on a dedicated trip or by a retrieving tool attached to the bottom of the service tool. After the isolation assembly is removed the upper zones can be completed by traditional stack pack procedures
