Within business analytics, users often have to browse through large numbers of columns displaying data. In a desktop environment, this is often done with commonly seen, simplistic scroll bars and little extra design is needed or added to help the user understand the length of the dataset under review. Existing solutions do not provide specifics on the number of items under review, and few can successfully extract information about an individual object. An example for calling out specific objects can be seen in some document viewers, where doing a search for a term places lines in the scroll bar to call out the locations of the search results.

A method is needed to better indicate to the user the actual volume or length of data that the software or system is presenting for review, as well as provide the capability to identify data of particular interest.

The novel contribution is an interface that provides a visual cue to the user to indicate the actual size of the dataset under review. In addition, the novel interface indicates

whether any specific objects in that set are of particular interest to the user. This

interface works in both desktop and touch screen environments (e.g., on a tablet).

The interface presents a scroll bar to show the general length of the set of data, increasing the user's understanding of how many objects exist in the columnar dataset through visualization within the controlling scroll interface. Alongside this, the interface uses size or color changes to display alerts, search results, changes, or other alterations in the data.

The interface uses a fisheye scroller. The fisheye scroller works on a number of levels.

At the very base, when the user scrolls, it is reflected in the lines/scroller at the bottom. Five items are shown on the screen (or more) with the five lines at the bottom reflect this with the center line being darker and the coloration petering off with the number of items on the screen.
