Disclosed is a system that enables users (i.e. senders) to create one or more customized messages targeted to specific individuals or groups and enables users (i.e. recipients) to receive the message upon arrival at a given location. Basic geocaching features that allow users to leave general messages for a broad group of recipients are familiar to users. Geocachers might also want to leave persistent messages (e.g., text, audio, or visual) for a subset of users matching specific network-based metadata elements, and have those intended recipients notified upon arrival at the location that a message is waiting. Currently, the combination of elements enabling end users to leave persistent messages for a specific subset of recipients and have those users receive notification does not exist.

Known technologies for delivering message through geocaching have the following limitations:


• Physical form only, not digital; therefore, it might not persist and physical messages can be lost

• Target only a specific individual • A specific application must be running

• Limited methods of communication (e.g., text message only)

• Limited to a single social network • Lack features for personal use • Limited or no ability for the sender to provide a gift for the recipient upon arrival • Messages are not linked to metadata; not linked to arrival information, target individuals by name or unique identifier (cannot appropriately respond if the individual changes • Lack of face recognition capabilities
• Sender does not know when the message is received

A system and method is needed to enable a user to leave persistent messages for individuals who match specific metadata attributes within a network or group upon arrival at a location.

The novel contribution is a system that enables users (i.e. senders) to create one or more customized messages targeted to specific individuals or groups and enables users (i.e. recipients) to receive the message upon arrival at a given location. The unique features of the system include:


1. Message creation


2. Selection of individuals via metadata from social network or groups


3. Selection of metadata under the condition that individuals may or may not be

  known at the time the message is left
4. Notification based on arrival of targeted individuals or groups who are to receive

the message(s)

5. Confirmation of receipt of message(s)

Optionally, recipients can then invoke one or more of the preceding steps to reply or add one or more messages. This messaging system can be embedded in the operating system (OS) and made available as a service. It does not require an

application to be running. The system does not require recipients to have an associated device; it can use a public device that has authenticated a sender or targeted a recipient by some means.

The core idea is to provide a system for persistence of geocaching messages for individuals, without prior notification.
