Method for Template-Based Panoramic Photograph Display on Mobile Device

Panoramic photographs are very popular for providing users with ability to capture a very wide surrounding photo. Multiple methods and systems are available for capturing panoramic photographs. The dimensions of most mobile devices are limited. In many cases, it is not possible to accommodate viewing the entire panoramic photograph in one mobile device display screen.

There are existing solutions for the capture and display of panoramic photos on devices of various sizes. A method and system are needed by which a panoramic photograph can be viewed on smaller screen mobile devices to improve viewing satisfaction.

The novel contribution is a method and system by which the mobile device manufacturer or users can create different types of templates to optimally view panoramic images on the device based on dimensions of device and photo. The selected panoramic photograph is fitted as per the selected template. The user can create and use templates as alternative layouts display a panoramic photo on a mobile device that typically has small screen.

The proposed system includes the following template viewing embodiments:

 Panoramic photo rolled into multiple continuous rows template

 Panoramic circular view template

 Panoramic horizontal compression view template

 Video extension

The panoramic viewing templates can be shared on social networking sites and downloaded to mobile devices for use. Software installed on a mobile device automatically selects the appropriate template for viewing a panoramic image based on the dimensions of the selected panoramic photo image. Alternatively, the user can manually select the desired template to reformat the display layout of the panoramic photo on the mobile device display.

Panoramic photo rolled into multiple continuous rows template

Figure 1 depicts how the system rolls the panoramic photographs into multiple continuous rows for viewing. This assists the user in viewing the panoramic photograph with better viewing coverage and clarity. At any point, the user can change the zoom level, and the system accordingly changes the number of rows. The user can scroll the screen to view the panoramic photograph.

Panoramic circular view template

Figure 2 depicts a circular viewing embodiment for a panoramic image. The user can define the template to view panoramic image. The template can be user-defined or configured and shared as per the user's requirement. The user can arrange the panoramic image in a circular or spiral orientation. Through a finger gesture, the user can scroll through the current viewing area and the system accordingly rolls the image portion. At any point, the user can view the current focus area and view the entire panoramic image.
