Abstract

A small Vent assembly is threaded into the wall of a downhole tool or end thread protector and is designed to open automatically if there is sufficient buildup of internal pressure. The vent would relieve the internal pressure automatically for surface-safe handling during operations or disassembly. Internal trapped pressure can buildup when a tool leaks downhole and is then returned to surface, during changes in temperature, or during storage for example with lithium batteries assembled inside a sealed housing. The vent assembly is simple and threads into the tool like a screw. There are no loose parts after opening and it remains recessed below the tool OD for function inside the well before the tool is returned to surface. It is robust for downhole conditions and seals against external wellbore pressure with both an oring seal and a metal to metal seal.
