Abstract

The present invention proposes a non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) monitoring system cuff air bag that uses phase change materials to generate air pressure instead of a pump. The proposed NIBP cuff air bag contains for example, a phase change liquid with low vaporizing temperature. An array of heaters is disposed inside the airbag. When the array of heaters is switched on, the liquid vaporizes and the cuff is inflated. A set of air pressure sensors are also embedded inside the cuff air bag. The air pressure sensors provide feedback to control the temperature of the array of heaters in order to control pressure of the cuff air bag. The set of air pressure sensors also monitor blood pressure pulse. The NIBP cuff air bag described herein is small and light that enables portability of the NIBP monitoring system.

NON-INVASIVE BLOOD PRESSURE CUFF BAG WITH AUTO INFLATION FUNCTION

BACKGROUND

The present invention relates generally to non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) monitoring system and more particularly to a NIBP cuff bag with auto inflation function.

Generally, a pump and a valve for deflation are needed to generate and control air pressure inside a cuff air bag during blood pressure measurement. The pump may be an air pump, an electronic pump or a manual air balloon. The pump and valve of the NIBP monitoring system are voluminous, which makes the NIBP monitoring system unsuitable for mobile use.

Further, the pump of the NIBP monitoring system generates significant noise during operation. Typically, during continuous monitoring of blood pressure in intensive care unit (ICU), noise of alarm and noise of the NIBP pump are two major sources of noise which disturb the patient. Furthermore, managing cables of the NIBP monitoring system presents a challenge.

It would be desirable to have a NIBP monitoring system which is compact and generates less noise.

Figure 1 depicts a sectional view of a cuff air bag of a non-invasive blood pressure monitoring system, according to an embodiment of the present invention.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The present invention proposes a cuff air bag of a non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) monitoring system. The cuff air bag uses a phase change liquid or a phase change gas to generate air pressure instead of using a pump. The use of the cuff air bag described herein provides a small and noiseless NIBP monitoring system.

Figure 1 depicts sectional view of the NIBP cuff air bag described herein. The NIBP cuff air bag contains a liquid having low vaporizing temperature. The NIBP cuff air bag is sealed. Further, an array of heaters is disposed inside the cuff airbag. When the array of heaters is switched on, the liquid vaporizes and the cuff is inflated.
