A Smart Device Determining Dose Setting System

This system enables both easier dose setting of insulin or other medication delivery pens, and storing of the dose information in a smart device such as a smart phone, such that this data can then be utilized for tracking, trending, or therapy optimization.  The system generally would work as follows:

·         Upon opening the smart phone app, a user interface screen would prompt the user to select the appropriate injection pen. This feature ensures that the proper dosing increment is selected. This is important, given that there are pens with concentrated insulins and various dialing increments.

·         After verifying selection of the proper pen, the user would hold the pen near the smart phone and simply dial the pen to the desired dose.

·         The app would enable and utilize the phone’s microphone to count the number of audible pen clicks the user has dialed.

·         As the user is dialing up to the dose, the phone would display the dose in large numbers. This also enables users with vision impairments or limitations to more easily see the dose selected.

·         After dialing the dose, the app would prompt the user to confirm the selected dose. This confirmation would also store the selected dose and time/date into a database, which could then be sent to another device, the cloud, or other useful tracking system.

·         A waveform recognition program could be utilized to ensure only certain types of pens would be recognized by the app.
