1.Abstract

This document describes a method and an arrangement for detecting a DC arc in a PV application. More precisely the DC arc is detected by utilizing AC and DC current measurement and signal processing.


2.Background

For recent years arc fault detectors have been mandatory for PV installations in certain regions. Fires started by the DC circuit of the PV generator have become more frequent. This has created a lot of arc fault detector inventions all over globe mostly by PV inverter manufacturers, but also independent arc fault detector products can be found. Various signal injecting and signal processing methods have been disclosed for nuisance free DC arc detection.

Arc fault detectors are known to suffer from nuisance tripping due to interference either from the PV inverter modulation or from the inductively/capacitively induced disturbances from the surrounding areas of the PV generator (eg. lightnings, train lines, welding). This is due to the fact that most arc fault detectors work from the principle that high frequency electrical property is being monitored from the DC lines of the PV generator.


3.New solution

In this new solution, an arc is detected by measuring both AC- and DC- component of the current distortion generated by the arc in the solar panel string.
