Abstract

Disclosed are a system and method to translate and preview Graphical Use Interface (GUI) text. The methodology tracks the origin of a visible text on an application UI and preview, which allows the translation verification test (TVT) tester to quickly identify the source of the error in translated visible text, thus enabling efficient modification.

Translatable resource files are the files loaded by the program to get the visible Graphical User Interface (GUI) texts. The resource files are separated from the binary code of the program while the binary code of the program loads the resource files to support translation at runtime.

Systems send the resource files to a translation service center (TSC) to translate into different languages to support localization. However, during the translation, the translator is not able to review the actual layout of the application; therefore, without relative context, the risk of mistranslation or misunderstanding of some text exists.

After translation, performing a translation verification test (TVT) can verify the correctness of the translation. Upon identifying a translation error, the TVT tester may have difficulty modifying it without knowing the location in the resource files of the string containing the error. Currently, a TVT tester uses a "guess and try" method: the tester guesses the origin of the text (i.e. position of one resource file) first using clues (e.g., search result of the visible text) and then attempting to modify it, which creates a new TVT build to verify. Upon failure, the procedure must be repeated. Sometimes when there are multiple search results for the error string, the TVT tester becomes confused and has to try many times to find the correct location of the string .

A method is needed to enable the TVT tester to quickly identify the source of the error in translated visible text , and thus allow efficient modification.
