Abstract

An island dressing for ostomy, with a breathable border adhesive providing the adhesion while an island adhesive containing an antimicrobial compositionwill provide antimicrobial properties. The antimicrobial composition can be any known in the art. Examples of this antimicrobial composition include chlorhexidine salts, specifically, Chlorhexidine digluconate, commonly referred to as Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG). The breathable border adhesive can be any adhesive known in the art. Specifically, the breathable adhesive can be a hydrocolloid adhesive. One such hydrocolloid adhesive is a thin absorbent skin adhesive (TASA), produced by Vancive Medical Technologies. The island adhesive can also be any adhesive known in the art. In one embodiment, the island adhesive is an acrylic adhesive. In one embodiment, both adhesives are considered skin friendly adhesives.The carrier would preferably be a breathable non-woven or film. The carrier layer can be weldable to an ostomy film.

Nature of the Problem:

According to studies, 30 to 60% of ostomates experience peristomal skin conditions.  Amongst these conditions, some are caused by infectious agents: candidiasis, cellulitis, folliculitis.
Most of these conditions are to be cured by using a topical antifungi or antibacterial on the skin. The added value of this invention would be to bring the treatment onto the flange itself.
