Abstract

Disclosed is an intelligent method to help a caller identify the most appropriate contact to call from a group of users. Upon initiating a call, the system invokes the "flexible callee" option through which a user can make direct call or can make a call to anyone from a group of users, whom the system automatically selects based on data analysis.

Method to Determine the Most Appropriate Person to Call among a Targeted Group of Users

Phone calls remain a popular communication option with smart mobile devices. A

location awareness service is built into most smart phones; however, it is not sufficiently leveraged when the user is making a call. A method is needed to utilize the location

awareness feature when a user is initiating a phone call in order to determine, based on the user's current activity as well as the surrounding users, the most appropriate person to call.

The novel contribution is an intelligent method to help a caller identify the most appropriate contact to call from a group of users. This is applicable when, among the potential recipients in the group, the user does not have a particular preference. The method uses a facts and usage behavior such as phone usage, plan available minutes, answering call pattern, not using phone for other applications, relative position (e.g., in driver's seat or passenger seat), etc. By leveraging the data about the target user and the surrounding user's phone and usage behavior, the system can quickly identify the best person to call to ensure higher success calling rates.

In an example implementation, as a caller initiates a call, instead of directly calling a given person, the user can indicate to call that person or that person and surrounding known contacts, anyone in a group, etc. The phone interface enables the user to specify a condition under which the user needs to reach anyone from a group of users; the users/call recipients are not specifically dictated by the caller.

The steps for using this method follow:

1. Caller selects a callee's contact number to call

2. Call menu extends to allow the "flexible callee" option

A. User can make direct call, or

    B. User can make a call to anyone from a group of users i. user-specified group of user...
