Abstract

The disclosed invention provides a distance measurement and warning system for a phototherapy unit. The system includes a distance measuring sensor attached to the phototherapy unit where light emitting diode (LED) lights are enclosed. The sensor measures distance between phototherapy light source and bed where neonate or baby is placed. If the distance measured by the sensor is not a recommended value then an in-built system raises alarm which alerts a user to take corrective action.

BACKGROUND

The present invention relates generally to a neonatal phototherapy unit and more particularly to a distance measurement and warning system for the neonatal phototherapy unit.

An effective phototherapy for infants requires maintaining a distance of 35 cm between light source and baby. In case the distance is more than 35 cm, then irradiance of light decreases which results in ineffective phototherapy. In case the distance maintained is less than 35 cm, then there is a possibility that irradiance affects baby skin.

There is no conventional technique known in the art that includes such a phototherapy system that indicates distance maintained between baby and light source.

It would be desirable to have a system that provides distance maintained between baby and light source in the phototherapy unit.

Figure 1 depicts a distance measurement and warning system that includes a phototherapy sensor and signal processor.

Figure 2 depicts an alternate distance measurement and warning system that includes a limit switch.
