Abstract: This disclosure describes films that show improved weatherability performance. The improvement is provided by metallocene catalyzed polyethylene, e.g., ExceedTM mPE and EnableTM mPE supplied by ExxonMobil Chemical Company.

Background

The weatherability of polyethylene film is a critical property for applications where the film will be exposed outdoors to Ultraviolet (UV) light, e.g., greenhouse film, tunnel film, mulch film, etc. With UV participation, free radicals are quickly produced in polyethylene molecules. The free radicals will result in carbonyl group formation in the film. The carbonyl groups cause cross- linking in the polyethylene structure. The more carbonyl groups will cause the more cross- linking in molecules. The more cross-linking will give the lower elongation at break performance as well as other reduced mechanical properties like tensile, dart impact, puncture resistance, tear resistance and defensive optical properties like haze and clarity.
