Tracking using Speaker Verification and Mobile Device Communication

Tracking delivery drivers or maintenance workers in the field is a challenge, despite the use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS). The main issue is quality of service and the difficulty of enforcing an employee's presence in a certain work environment.

The novel contribution is a system for tracking employees in the field using speaker verification and mobile device communication. The system utilizes GPS-based triggers to message the location of a certain individual. A remote telephone system can call the mobile device unit to verify the presence of the person. A speaker verification component verifies the person's identity. For example, the system can prompt the user to say specific words for verification to eliminate spoofing or masquerading. In addition, the system transmits a time stamp from field equipment to a field staff smart phone via a tracking application.

Figure 1 illustrates a route with several intermediate points (i.e. 1-6) along which a person needs to be tracked with a GPS voice system. As the person travels from location to location, the information is sent to a central monitoring facility. The person carries a smartphone with location services. As the person arrives at each destination, the central station telephone server calls the person to verify identity; it is not someone else doing the activity on behalf of another person.
