Abstract

A method and system is disclosed for determining validity of a vehicle parking spot based upon available signage for parking a vehicle. The method and system utilizes a number of input variables to include a database, a user-profile, global positioning system (GPS), camera and bar-code reader in a user device for determining validity of a parking spot. The user device can be, but need not be limited to, a smartphone.

Frequently, automobile parking signage in large cities is confusing which leaves people unsure whether they can park in a parking spot without getting a parking violation.

Disclosed is a method and system for determining validity of a parking spot at a given point in time for a specific user's profile. The method and system utilizes a number of input variables to include a database, a user-profile, global positioning system (GPS), camera and bar-code reader in a user device for determining validity of a parking spot. The user device can be, but need not be limited to, a smartphone.

The method and system receives one or more of GPS coordinates, image of the signage and bar-code of the signage from the user device to generate a query. The method and system then queries a database including information about one or more of streets of a city, city-specific signs and rules engine using the query. The rules engine includes one or more rules which can be, but need not be limited to, time of day, commercial vehicle allowances, holiday and weekend parking, handicapped or emergency services parking, etc. Thereafter, the method and system provides a recommendation on whether the vehicle can legally be parked without incurring a parking ticket.
