Abstract

The present invention proposes a technique to assemble and disassemble a cartridge or bundle of a centrifugal compressor in a turbomachinery. The technique utilizes a cradle sliding tool that support the cartridge from the bottom side utilizing special regulation to align the cartridge to a compressor casing.

BACKGROUND

The present invention relates generally to turbomachinery and more particularly to assembly and disassembly of a cartridge of a centrifugal compressor in the turbomachinery.

Generally, insertion and removal of centrifugal flow compressor bundle into and from the compressor casing is a challenging task due to the massive size, weight and structure of these devices. For example, the compressor bundle may weigh about 5,000 pounds and more. Further, the structural challenge rises from the bundle being an annular member which is inserted into an annular cavity formed in the casing. Therefore, accomplishing insertion and removal of the bundle from the casing while avoiding damage to the mating members is difficult.

Conventional techniques allow assembly and disassembly of bundle of centrifugal compressor using support of crane or lifting device. When the cartridge has been moved outside the compressor casing the support of a crane is required. Usually, turbomachinery skid on off-shore applications are closed and customer specified panels cover enclosures for the turbomachinery. These constraints do not permit utilization of a crane to assemble or disassemble an internal cartridge of the turbomachinery.

The only way to move the compressor during maintenance on site is using a lifting device. Such lifting devices used require a mark and certification. Further, conventional techniques run the risk wrong axial alignment during assembly procedure. Furthermore, turbomachinery enclosure disassembly is required for maintenance to be carried out.


It would be desirable to have an efficient technique which does not require a crane or lifting device to assemble and disassemble bundle or cartridge of the centrifugal compressor.
