Abstract

Offshore platforms/vessels are often moored to the seabed via suction piles. Mooring chain connects the pile to the platform. Vessel motions can cause the mooring chain to erode the seabed around the suction pile, thereby reducing the horizontal capacity of the suction pile. The enhanced suction pile has an additional convex surface secured to the exterior of the suction pile on the side of the pile facing the platform. The additional surface is wider than the diameter of the suction pile and therefore helps to maintain the pile holding capacity even if soil directly in front of the pile is removed.

Enhanced Suction Pile

Main Body and Figures

If trenching is expected given the mooring design/soil properties, then the anchor must be modified to maintain the design capacity with or without the soil that will be removed via trenching.

The enhanced suction pile provides an additional face that uses the remaining soil beyond the width of the suction pile to provide holding capacity. This face could be installed before pile installation or after installation.

The benefits of the enhanced suction pile are as follows:

• No need to increase length of mooring chain/mooring system footprint, i.e. more flexibility in anchor location

• No need to move padeye location on suction pile

• Can potentially be installed as needed (after pile installation)
