Abstract

A whipstock assembly comprising a whipstock body with an electromagnet and associated power source mounted on the upper back side of the whipstock scoop face. The electromagnetic whipstock assembly allows for low-side exits as well as ease of re-entry into the lateral leg. A piston is shifted to complete a circuit, allowing the power source to provide power to the electromagnet. The purpose of the electromagnet is to allow for selective magnetism of the upper whipstock scoop backside against the high-side of the casing wall during a low-side horizontal casing exit. This mechanism allows for ingress/egress of milling/drilling BHAs and completion systems through the casing exit window until the junction has been otherwise suitably supported. This whipstock can be used for horizontal low-side multi-lateral exit applications in which the whipstock may need to be retrieved and recovered, or, like in most casing exit applications, the whipstock can be left downhole.
