The foundation of any Big Data and Smarter Analytics architectural solution is built upon a comprehensive reference architecture and a strong data governance program. For businesses that have invested in Big Data, storing the data is the easy part; the difficult part is using that data to drive business value and improve business results. A comprehensive Big Data governance program is the key to moving from massive data ingestion to enabling the new data, technology, and processes to deliver business profitability. Data governance will continue to increase in importance as the amount of data being generated continues to grow. However, the Big Data domain currently has no clear, disciplined, methodical approach to address added data complexity.
Many organizations suffer problems caused by poor master data, such as inaccurate reporting, arguments over which data is appropriate, bad decisions based on incorrect definitions, data obsolescence, and more. In addition, the in-house data governance programs of many organizations are not comprehensive or not adequate, and put many at risk.
The novel approach presented herein focuses on solving problems caused by the complexity Big Data initiatives. This disciplined, proven, and methodical approach breaks down the complexity into a set of business and technical functions and uses a reference architecture-based approach to ensure completeness across all people, process, and technology categories.
The novel contribution is a system and method for setting up a comprehensive Data Governance and Execution Program for a Big Data-centric environment. This system and method are comprised of three main components:
1. A Big Data Governance framework using a data-driven approach with a focused emphasis on people, process, and technology
2. A Big Data Reference Architecture (BDRA) consisting of all the functional pillars and foundational layers where the Data Governance tenets can be linked to ensure completeness
3. A method for the establishment and ongoing execution of a Big Data Center of Excellence (CoE) driven by the Data Governance framework and BDRA
This novel approach ties these three components together to create an agile, holistic, and comprehensive Big Data-centric Governance and CoE framework. The method and set of techniques leverage a proven approach to provide a repeatable, consistent, and comprehensive implementation of the optimal Big Data Governance framework, which is based upon the client's current state, level of Big Data immersion, and a flexible set of requirements. In addition, the method combines the three components in a unique way that currently does not exist and applies directly to the Big Data domain complexity and related issues.
