Abstract

Autonomous Iso-Enthalpic ICD for the control of water or gas in horizontal and vertical completions not limited by high temperature In the present invention, a device resistant to high temperature that being sensitive to the presence of high mobility fluids like water or gas in oil streams reacts blocking the fluid passage whenever the water or gas content reaches or exceeds a pre-set condition or water/gas ratio is proposed for patent. The device is a substantially tubular with at least two fluid passages eccentrically perforated in a solid cylinder: a first flow passage internally shaped as of a convergent/divergent channel axially oriented whose profile is calculating considering a substantially iso-enthalpic flow, comprising one sphere and a single or toroid/donut inner space-seating for said sphere for the blocking/control of the annular flow of fluids coming from the formation and, a second fluid passage for receiving and further conveyance of the flow exiting said first flow passage to the surface. The device may or not comprise a screen for sand control and can be connected with any type of screen or blank pipe as required. The device can be deployed as regular ICD in horizontal completions to prevent uneven flow pattern within the formation and to prevent gas/water conning due to toe to heel effect and, advantageously in vertical completion where gas/water cross flow is expected. The device enable the stimulation and the gravel pack as well, and it can be deployed with the throats plugged by mean of disappearing plugs for testing, setting packer, cleaning and others. The device is simple and easy to manufacture and it is compatible to any down-hole tool or screen. Another advantage of the present inventions is: As there is no elastomer or sealing implications, this device is very compatible with steam and has no limitation with the temperature and or viscosity of the oil making it suitable to heavy and extra heavy oil. In the present invention, the Autonomous term indicates that said sphere is dragged to the throat by means of a local suction or vacuum effect created by the high velocity infringed by the flow of substantially large amount of either gas or water as they flow throughout the throat until the sphere blocks the fluid flow. Once the pressure is equalized or the fluid flow stops, the suction effects ends enabling the sphere returning to its toroid/donut shaped seat so to restore the flow of oil. The sphere seat has a depth “h” not exceeding a pre-set value relating the viscosity of the fluid and the density of said sphere so to start pivoting towards the throat to block the flow passage when required.
