Extracting concepts such as, Internet Protocol (IP) address, Error Code (EC) from a machine-generated log is essential for log management applications. Despite the effort by log management applications to develop out-of-the-box solutions for as many as possible types of known log types, there are still problems in identifying appropriate concepts. In reality, customers of such applications still often need to develop new extractors to identify concepts that are not identified or incorrectly identified by the pre-built extraction programs. In order to develop such new extractors, it is essential to view extraction results of existing concepts and identify mistakes contained in the extraction results. This can be a challenging task to users in identifying patterns from logs, identifying mistakes from the extraction results (identifying part of the logs not identified by any extractors, identifying part of the logs not identified by any extractors, identifying part of the logs mistakenly identified by an extractor and identifying part of the logs identified by an extractor, but contains information that is better identified by additional extractors). Existing solution which highlight the extraction results, suffers from two main drawbacks such as, non-obvious patterns and equal treatment of matched and unmatched parts.

Disclosed is a method and system for interactive display of extracted concepts from a machine generated log. The method and system automatically identifies interesting patterns of log by allowing folding and unfolding of the extraction results into a single concept name or alternatively into different types of concepts names.
