Abstract

Problem

Due to a high degree of sharpness, the pins used in security tags are capable of puncturing human skin and causing injury to a user. This is of particular concern at express checkout point of sale stations. It is also a safety concern when a self-detaching mechanism is proposed.

A design is needed to ensure the safe use of pins in security tags.

Solution/Novel Contribution

The novel contribution is a design for a self-retracting pin in a security tag. The instant the tag is removed from the pin, the pin retracts. This solution solves the problem of exposing a sharp pin or object to the paying customer and employees who traditionally handle tags and pins at the point of sale.

Method/Process

A standard tack-and-pin assembly is assembled inside an outer plastic housing with a spring. The spring is placed under the plastic tack head. When the tag is placed in a detacher and the pin is released, the force of the spring immediately pushes the pin inside the outer plastic housing.
