Abstract

The disclosure provides a Light Emitting Diode (LED) fixture. The LED fixture has one or more LEDs positioned on both sides of an optical diffuser. The optical diffuser has a surface texture that provides optical scattering due to Total Internal Reflection (TIR). The optical diffuser has a micro structure that offers a high aspect ratio on the area of high intensity distribution and a low aspect ratio on the area of low intensity distribution. The Optical diffuser scatters light from the surface of high aspect ratio to the surface of low intensity distribution to provide uniform light distribution.

BACKGROUND

The present invention relates generally to lighting technologies and more particularly to a Light Emitting Diode (LED) fixture for providing uniform light distribution.

In conventional LED fixtures, a diffuser is used to prevent contrast of light intensity. The contrast is generated due to non uniform intensity distribution of light. Generally, a Lambertian diffuser scatters light efficiently and makes overall intensity of light uniform. However, the Lambertian diffuser suffers from strong back reflection. The back reflection is about 40%. As a result, the current LED fixtures offer poor efficiency of about 80-85% and are unable to provide uniform distribution of light.

It would be desirable to have a LED fixture for providing uniform light distribution.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The proposed disclosure provides a Light Emitting Diode (LED) fixture. The LED fixture has a Lambertian diffuser that offers uniform light distribution.

The proposed LED fixture includes one or more Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) positioned on both sides of an optical diffuser. The optical diffuser has a surface texture that provides optical scattering. Optical scattering is achieved due to Total Internal Reflection (TIR). The optical diffuser has a desired scattering angle i.e. Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) to provide sufficient hiding power. In some embodiments, the optical diffuser has a scattering angle of 60 degree and a distance of 10 cm from the LEDs.
