Most of the asset management systems, require file system scans, which are time and resource consuming. This is because most of the software discovery catalogs are based in majority on file signatures. Presented idea allows to limit the resource consumption of SAM agent, by integration with anti-virus file system scan engines.

Idea is to create antivirus agent plugins for most popular antivirus software on the market, this should be just several vendors that cover 90% of the enterprise space. This plugin would leverage file system scans which are performed by antivirus agent and create and maintain complete and accurate file system information as a cache for SAM agent. Hence SAM agent would not need to perform file system scans at all .

When SAM agent is installed on the machine , it would discover if known and supported antivirus agent is already running on the machine , this can be checked once in a while

just in case antivirus is installed later on . If there is no antivirus agent that SAM agent has plugin for, it will scan file system as usual, however if there is supported antivirus agent found plugin will integrate with antivirus scan engine and start creation and maintaining of the cache containing file system information that SAM agent will use instead of regular file system scans.
