Abstract

A compound having biocidal activity is the reaction product of A) a compound of the following formula OCN–R2 whereby - R2 contains at least one Si–O–R1-moiety; and B) a biocide or the precursor of a biocide which comprises at least one group capable of reacting with an isocyanate group selected from –OH, –N(H)– and –SH; and a compound having biocidal activity comprising the following structural unit R3–X–C(=O)–N–R2 whereby - R2 contains at least one Si–O–R1-moiety; - R3 contains a group having biocidal activity and - X is O, N or S. The compound may furthermore be used to form to the reaction product of - the compound having biocidal activity, according to any one of the embodiments described; and - a polymer having functional groups capable of reacting with the Si–O–R1-moieties of the compound having biocidal activity according to any one of the embodiments. Furthermore of importance is a composition comprising the compound having biocidal activity according to any one of the embodiments or comprising said reaction product; a paint, a coating or a film comprising said composition is described. A process for producing a compound having biocidal activity and a polymer modified with a compound having biocidal activity is also provided. Of further importance is the use of a compound of the formula OCN–R2 whereby - R2 contains at least one Si–O–R1-moiety. for modifying a biocide or the precursor of a biocide which comprises at least one group capable of reacting with an isocyanate group selected from –OH, –N(H)– and –SH.

Field of the invention


The present invention relates to biocides modified with a group rendering them chemically attachable, e.g. to a surface or a polymer, a composition comprising said modified biocide and a

polymer containing the afore-mentioned biocide, processes for the production of the biocide and the polymer and the use an isocyanate-containing compound for modifying a biocide.

Background of the invention


Both exterior and interior surfaces and substrates of all types, when exposed to common

environmental conditions, e.g. moisture, are prone to attack, discoloration and various kinds of destruction by fungal and algael organisms. As a result, there is a great need and requirement for an effective and economical means to protect for extended periods of time both exterior and interior surfaces and various type substrates from the deterioration and destruction caused by such microorganisms.

Materials which need protection with a suitable biocide include paints, coatings, stucco, concrete, stone, cementaceous surfaces, wood, caulking, sealants, and textiles as well as materials and other substances which may be attacked by microorganisms.

However, biocides in coatings, on surfaces, etc. often show unfavorable leaching behavior leading to toxicity in the surrounding environment and, simultaneously, to a lower service life of

the coating. Thus, there is the need of lowering the leaching of biocides, e.g. by immobilizing the biocide in the coating.

It has now been found that many biocides or precursors thereof can be modified with a compound bearing an isocyanate and a hydrolysable silane-group which modified biocide can then be attached to a variety of substrates, e.g. surfaces or polymers.

Disclosure of the invention


Therefore, the present invention provides in a first embodiment a compound having biocidal activity which is the reaction product of


A) a compound of the following formula

OCN-R2 whereby

-R2 contains at least one Si-O-R1-moiety;


B) a biocide or the precursor of a biocide which comprises at least one group capable

of reacting with an isocyanate group, selected from -OH, -N(H)- and -SH, preferably selected from -OH and -N(H)-, more preferably from -OH and -NH2 and most preferably from -OH.

In a second embodiment, a compound having biocidal activity is provided comprising the following structural unit

       R3-X-C(=O)-N-R2 whereby


- R2 contains at least one Si-O-R1-moiety;

- R3 contains a group having biocidal activity and
- X is O, N or S, preferably O or N, more preferably O.

It has been found that the compound having biocidal activity according to the first and second embodiment of the invention can be chemically bound to a carrier, e.g. to a substrate or a
