Abstract

A proposed method consists of an overhead, centralized RFID reader and parallel lanes of conveyer belts operating at different speeds at the Point of Sensing. The user will place the items that are to be sensed on a conveyer belt. Items placed on each conveyor belt will travel at the same speed of the conveyor belt. Due to the constant unique speed of each conveyor, items on each conveyor belt can now be differentiated by the RFID reader by monitoring the rate of change of position of each tag. The rate of change of position of a tag is the speed of that relative tag. The system can then associate the speed of an individual tag to a corresponding conveyor belt by noting the matching speeds.

The current method employed in retail checkout counters is manually scanning barcode of every item, which involves lot of manual work, when multiple counters are in place. The proposed solutions will provide a fully automated, secure, and optimized solution for retail checkout counter potentially reusing existing conveyor infrastructure.

Another method of associating RFID tags to a conveyor belt would be to have a known, unique RFID tag attached to each conveyor belt within the system. This belt RFID tag would move at the same rate as the conveyor belt to which it is attached. The rate of change of position of the object RFID tag on the objects placed on the conveyor belt can be read and compared to the known, unique belt RFID tag affixed to the conveyor belt. The object RFID tags on objects on the conveyor belt can then be associated to that conveyor belt and read into the system as such.
