Abstract

Drag & drop is the most common action on the computer. The drop target, however ,can be very hard to locate sometimes in deep level of nested structure. In this article, a view with detective boundary outside and aggregated items inside is provided to dynamically guide the user through hierarchical structure with large number of items to the target level and target place.

Drag & drop is the most common action on the computer. The drop target, however ,can be very hard to locate sometimes. E.g

1) When the items are too many so that the target is not visible in current screen (pic 1)

2) When target is hidden within nested structure, like sub folders of bookmark (pic 2)

Under such situation ,a user need drag the object through long distance, in the same time, try to go inside the nested structure. This is quite error prone, if user accidentally looses the mouse during the process, he may not even know where his object is actually dropped.

In this invention, a view with detective boundary outside and aggregated items inside is provided to dynamically guide the user through hierarchical structure

with large number of items to the target level and target place,like in Pic 3 -1. The view will be aggregated and shown when drag & drop action is detected.

When mouse hovering on the items inside, the view will change to show the deeper level of hierarchical structure, when mouse moves to detective boundary, the view will change to show the upper level of hierarchical structure. When items at the same level are too many, items will be automatically aggregated by alphabet order. This system and method allows user to complete drag & drop action easily in a continuous mode without extra action.
