When a handheld device (e.g., tablet, smart phone, etc.) user wants to add icons (emoji) to the conversation, the system-provided list often contains so many icons that the user has difficulty quickly finding one that is relevant.

The novel contribution is a system and method that identifies the most relevant emoji based on the content of a text messaging conversation, and then displays a shorter, optimized list of icons from which the user can make a selection. All of the available

emoji have names, and can have categories (i.e. vehicles, numbers, animals, foods, etc.), which makes grouping relevant emoji possible. In addition, continuous user tracking enables the system to provide an up-to-date, relevant list of emoji.

To implement the system in a preferred embodiment:

1. The system tracks which icons the user has used in past conversations with every other user

2. The system determines the mood and topic of the conversation between the two users

3. Based on the results of Step 2, the system presents a list of the most relevant emoji

4. The user quickly and easily locates the applicable emoji 5. The system continuously updates the emoji list based on the icons the user uses throughout tracked conversations
