Polymer hydrogels belong to the class of polymers possessing a characteristic ability to absorb water and retain it under pressure. This class includes various polymers that are widely used in personal hygiene products as well as pharmaceutically active substances such as sevelamer hydrochloride, sevelamer carbonate, colesevelam, colestipol etc.

The process for preparation of pharmaceutically active polymer hydrogels usually includes drying as the last step wherein the moisture content of the substance is brought to desired limits.

Herein, we are disclosing a process for drying of pharmaceutically active polymer hydrogels such as sevelamer hydrochloride, sevelamer carbonate, colesevelam hydrochloride, colestipol etc. using radio frequency dryers. The process enables fast drying of the polymeric materials, with high control on degradation process and quite convenient on commercial scale. Depending on the moisture content in the reaction mass, this technique may be used in combination with fluidized bed dryer or rotatory vacuum dryer for drying of such hydrogels.
