Abstract

A technique to improve build quality and control surface characteristics of materials in additive manufacturing is disclosed. A reactive material (also called a gettering system) is included inside a process chamber of a direct metal laser melting (DMLM) equipment. The gettering system is heated to react with excess oxygen inside the process chamber. In one embodiment, the gettering system is placed at an argon inlet to ensure that gas flow is gettered prior to coming in contact with a powder bed. In alternate embodiment, the gettering system is placed in an argon line path and outside of the DMLM equipment.

BACKGROUND

The present invention relates generally to additive manufacturing (AM) processes, and more particularly to a technique to improve build quality and control surface characteristics of materials in additive manufacturing.  

Additive manufacturing (also known as Additive Layer Manufacturing) involves buildup of materials to make a net or near net shape (NNS) object.  In other words, additive manufacturing is used to produce functional, complex objects, layer by layer, without moulds or dies.  

There exist various conventional techniques to improve build quality and control surface characteristics of materials in additive manufacturing.  However, conditions during the additive manufacturing processing, such as oxygen inside the chamber, pose a challenge.  As a result, the conventional techniques can be unviable, result in cracks, poor surface finish, and other failures in the materials.

  

It would be desirable to have a technique to improve the build quality and control the surface characteristics of the materials in additive manufacturing.
