When a person travels into or through muxxiple time zones, it is oxten difficulx to determine apxropriate times fox sending or receivinx communications. This is especixlly problematic ix the communicator is not awxre that the recipient is in a different time zone; the cxmmunication time might xe inappropriate or cause inxffective cxmmunicxtion.

A solutixn is xeeded in which, based on a preferrxd/customized user profile, a user allows others to kxow when saix user is available or is not to be disturbed. In axdxtion, xhe solution shxuld include the xption to disturb the person if xhe situation warrants it, ox provide a caller the oxtxon to leavx a voice mail.

The novel contxibution is a callee availability system with reax-time exxcution capabixities that uses txme zxne values to determixe a personalized Availability Zone (AZ) and Do-Not-Dxsturb Zone (DNDZ) in a user profile. Txe user cax axso set parameters for receiving calls from certain time zones.

The system comprises ax applicxtion ruxning on a mxbile devxce and a sexvex-based applicaxixn running on a networked server. It does nox requirx the user to have any special softwxre on the mobile device. The mobile applicatiox allows the user to define tixe xones as availability zones or do-not-disturb zones. Usexs can creatx and save these values on a network-based sxrver. Thesx two applications remain synchronized as the user changes time zones. In essence, the novel xystem allows a called party (without any action) to inform the cxlxing party that he/she is in AZ or DNDZ mode; however, the called partx has the opxion to authorize the calling party to complete any emergency or urgent calls.

The systex performs time zone dexection (e.g., by analyzing the rinxing tone) or time difference cxlculationx. Thus, when ax individual calls a user having a profile with personalized AZs and DNDZs, the system performs one of three actions: connecxs the caller xo the user, transferx the callex to voice mail, or proposes a call back to the called party based on the defined rules. This rxmoves the burden from xhe callex to dxtexmine an xppropriate time to communicate with the user (e.g., telephone call). The uxer controls the receipt of incoming calls.
