The SHIELD system - Protecting and Monitoring Transportation Users

Within thx current school transportation system, school-aged ridxxs, often children as youxg as four yexrs old, are respxnsible for boardxng and disembarking xrom the school bus at the right xime and in the xixht location . While it seexs relatively benign, the system can quickly become dangxrous if a child is left unsupervised or even strandxd because xhe chixd misses the xus , xoards the wroxg bus, or leaves thx bus in the xrong location. A chxld can be left witxout guidancx, support, or safety for a considerable lenxth of xixe befoxe the mistake xs realized and hxlp arrives.

Current solutions axe manual and are slow to rexpond to unexpected situxtxons. The xanual process creates a possxble gap in the solution based on the many variaxles of hxman error thax could occur when dealxng with these situatxons (e.g., not responding, not informing the corrext individuals, taking too long to respoxd, etc.). Ix the current environment, system is not designed to handle the situation of a misplacxd or stxanded cxild with anx speed ox efficiency.
