Abstract

This invention is to combine PTT (Push to talk) button with pressure sensor. When subscriber user is pressing PTT and talking and there is an unexpected emergency coming up, he/she could depress (at this moment PTT is still pressed on) PTT button with great force, when the pressure sensor detects the pressing force is greater than one pre-defined threshold (this threshold is larger than average pressing force that triggers a normal call) the PTT will be kept for a while then subscriber could free his/her hands to handle the emergency. The period that PTT is kept pressed is proportional to the pressing force that exceeds the pre-defined threshold. When the period mentioned above is going to expires (2-3 seconds ahead) subscriber does warn user with buzz, shaking, LED or other method. Subscriber user could re-extend the ?PTT hold? period by pressing PTT again (pressing force must be larger than pre-defined threshold) or just let it expires.

ABSTRACT

For mission critical communication, subscriber users need a solution for them to extend the PTT pressing period to maintain the ongoing communication call while operating with both of hands. In this paper, a method with the key idea of using the detected force applied on PTT button is introduced.

PROBLEM

While subscriber user is pressing PTT to talk he/she may encounter some emergency situations that need to handle with both hands such as operating steering wheel to avoid vehicle accident or drawing the gun, subscriber user has to release PTT to deal with coming emergency which means the communication will drop. For mission critical communication this may be unacceptable and lead to disastrous result.

So the need exists for keeping PTT pressed status while subscriber user needs to handle emergency situations with both hands.

SOLUTION

    This invention is to combine PTT (Push to Talk) button with pressure sensor. When subscriber user is pressing PTT and talking and there is an unexpected emergency coming up, he/she could depress (at this moment PTT is still pressed on) PTT button with greater force, when the pressure sensor detects the pressing force is greater than one pre-defined threshold (this threshold is larger than average pressing force that triggers a normal call) the PTT will be kept for a while then subscriber could free his/her hands to handle the emergency.

The period that PTT is kept pressed is proportional to the pressing force that exceeds the pre-defined threshold.

    The figure 2 shows the ratio relationship between the pressure detected by PTT pressure sensor and the time that PTT will be hold, in this chart we assume 20 Newton is the pre-defined threshold that triggers the “PTT hold” event.

    This minimal pressure threshold triggers the event that PTT will be hold for 4.3 seconds (average group call duration), the much pressure the sensor detects the longer PTT will be hold, the “PTT hold” timer stops increasing after pressure exceeds some pre-defined maximal value.
