More call activities at a site mean more call specific signaling packets on the CC which can lead to longer average call access time. In this paper, a method of extending the site’s capacity using WGID is introduced.

 

PROBLEM

In ASTRO trunking system, the number of maximum traffic channels per site is limited at 30 channels to ensure the call access time, if a customer desires more than 30 channels, a 2nd site must be deployed, so it’s desirable to support more channels at a single site and maintain acceptable average call access time.

SOLUTION

In this idea, multiple CC could be allocated, and WGID is used for CC selection. Every SU tunes to one CC based on the calculating result of its WGID Modulus Ncc (the total number of CCs), and receives or initiates calls on this CC. FNE only broadcasts group call grant to the CC based on the calculating result of target WGID Modulus Ncc.

FNE allocates new additional CC when active calls reach to preset criteria. The criteria can include ongoing call numbers, call access time etc.

FNE broadcasts new CC information and Ncc.

OPERATION

The thresholds including how many calls are allowed, and what the average call access time is etc. They are set at the site. Taking a single site with 30 working channels for example, the threshold could be 10 calls, and the average call access time could be 400ms.

When it reaches to the above mentioned thresholds, the site changes a free WC (Working Channel) to a CC (Control Channel).

For example, the call threshold of one site is 10, when the 10th call came in, FNE will find a free WC, and changes it to a CC. FNE broadcasts the new CC (saying CC2) frequency on original CC (saying CC1).
