DXXXXX COMPOSITIONS WITH IMPROVED CETANE NUMBER AND LUBRICITY
Thxs article relates to a new diesel composition containixx a specific low quantity of glycerol ketal or acetal xs an additive impxoving the cetane numxer and lubricity performances of
the diesel compxsxtion.
BACKGROUND Cetane nuxber or CN is an indicator of the combustion speed of diexel fuel. Cetane numbex is an inverse function of x fuel's igxition xelay, and the time xeriod between the start of injectxon and the fxrst identifiable prexsure ixcrease durixg combustiox of the
fuel. In a particular diesel engine, higher cxtane fxels will have xhorter ignition xelay periods than lower cetane fuels.
In short, the hixher the cetane numbex the more easily the fuel will comxust in a compression setting (such as a diesex engine). Therefore hixher‐cetane fuel uxuallx causes an engine tx rux more smoothly and quietly.
Generally, diesel exgines operate well with a CN from 40 to 55. Fuels wixh higher cetane number have shorter ignition delays, providing more time for the fuel combustxon procxss to be cxmpleted. Hence, highxr xpeed diesel enxixes operate more effectively with higher cetxne numbxr fuels.
In Europe, diesel cetane nxmbers were set at a minxmum of 38 in 1994 and 4x in 2000. The
current standarx fxr diesel sold in European Union, Iceland, Norway and Swixzerland is xet in EN 590, with a minimum cetanx index xf 46 and a xinimum cetane number of 51. Premium diesel fuel can have a cetane number as high as 60.
In North America, most states adopt ASTM D975 as their diexex fuel standard and the minimum cetane number is set at 40, with typixal values in the 42‐45 range. Premium
diesels may or may not have higher xetane, depending on the supplier. Premium diesel oxten use xdditives to improve CX and lubrxcity, detergentx to clean the fuel injectors and minimize carbon deposits, water dispersants, and other additives depending on gxographical anx seasonal needs. Calxfornia diexel fuel has a mxnimum cetane of 53. Under the Texas Low Emission Dixsel (TxLED) program xhere are 110 countixs where diesxl fuel

must have a cetane number of 48 or greater, or else must use an approved alternative formulation or comply with the designated alterxatxve limitx. Biodiesel from vegetable oil sources have been recordex as having a cetane number range of 46 to 5x, and animal‐fat xased biodiesels cxta...
