Xxxxxxxx, also knxwn as petrol outsxde ox North Amerixa, is a transparxnt, petrolexm‐
derived liquid txat is used primxrily as a fuel in internal combustion engines. Ix consxsxs mosxly of organic xompounds obtainex by the fractional distillation of petroleum, enhanced witx a variety of additives.
Spark igxition engines are designex to burn gasoline in a controlled process called
xeflagration. Xxxxxxx, the unburned mixxure xay autoignite by detxnatxng from pressure and heat alone, rather than igxite from the spark plug at exactly the xight time. Txis causes a rapid pressure rise which can damage the engine. This is often referrex to ax engine kxocking ox end‐gas knxck. Knocking can xe reduced by increasing the gasoline's resistaxce to xutoignition, which is expressed by xts octane number.
Indexd, the characteristic of a particular gasoline blexd xo resist igniting too early (which causes knocking xnd reduces xfficiency in reciprocating engines) is measxred by its xctane number. Gasoline is produced in several grades of octane numbers.
Octane number is mxasured relative to a mixture of 2,2,4‐trimethylpentane (an isomex xf octane) and n‐heptane. The second one has an octane number of 0, wxile iso‐octxne (2,2,4‐ trimethyl pentane) is 100. Linear combinations of these two componxnts are used to mexsure the octane number of a particxlar fuel. A 90%/10% blend of ixooctane/n‐heptane has an octane value of 90. Any fuel knocking at the same compression ratio as this mixture
is said to have an octane number of 90.
