Abstract

A dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) fixture for accurately measuring friction of a sample material is disclosed. The DMA fixture includes a set of sliding members, a set of precision springs, friction specimens, a base plate, and a center post. The friction specimens are sandwiched between the set of precision springs and the center post and also covered by the set of sliding members. The DMA fixture uses the set of precision springs for accurately applying a normal load (perpendicular to sliding direction) on the friction specimens. Further, the DMA fixture uses the normal load on the friction specimens to calculate the friction.

DYNAMIC MECHANICAL ANALYZER (DMA) FIXTURE FOR FRICTION MEASUREMENT

BACKGROUND

The present disclosure relates generally to mechanical analysis of materials, and more particularly to a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) fixture for accurately measuring friction of a sample material.

A dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) is a precision device used to measure viscoelastic properties of such as friction and mechanical damping among others of a sample material.  The DMA measures changes in the sample material due to changes in temperature and/or external forces.  

One of a conventional DMA fixture (as shown in Figure 1) uses screws to secure the sample material.  However, such conventional DMA fixture is unable to control the normal load on the sample material and therefore unable to calculate precise friction of the sample material.

Therefore, it would be desirable to have an improved dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) fixture for accurately measuring friction of the sample material.
