Abstract

Concentrated alkanolammonium salt of alkylbenzene sulfonates are prepared by neutralising alkylbenzene sulfonic acids with alkanolamines in the presence of alcohol solvents. The resulting high active water-free LAS derivatives show good process ability and can be used in metalworking fluid formulations.

The LAS derivatives imparts strong emulsifier ability to the formulation while the alcohol solvent can be chosen in order to enhance oil solubility. The absence of base oil in the system makes it particularly attractive for concentrated metalworking formulations because of the easy managing and handling.

DESCRIPTION

The present innovation relates to the highly concentrated anionic surfactants being alkanol ammonium salts of alkylbenzene sulfonates in combination with solvent and their use in metalworking formulations.

Sulfonates are used in metalworking application because of their well-known emulsification ability and adjuvant effect in corrosion protection. Commercially available sulfonates sodiumĀ  salt used in this field are mainly based on sulfonic acid derivatives with molecular weight ranging from 400 and 500 g/mol.

Low molecular weight sulfonic acids, e.g. the ones based on C10-C13 alkylbenzene, are generally not popular in MW applications because of their low compatibility with oily ingredients, making the incorporation into concentrated systems difficult due to the presence of a significant amount of water.

With the aim to develop a version of alkylbenzene sulfonate salt with improved oil solubility it was discovered that the solvent could be used to tune product solubility.

The alkylbenzene sulfonate alkanolammonium salts can be prepared by neutralizing alkylbenzenebsulfonic acids in the presence of alcohol solvents. Alkylbenzene sulfonic acids of various chain length can be used, e.g C10-C24 derivatives. Preferred are linear C10-17 alkylbenzene sulfonic acids that are commercially available.

As alkanolamines monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, monoisopropanolamine, diisopropanolamine, triisopropanolamine and also blends of alkanolamines can be used.

Neutralization is performed in the presence of alcohol solvent. Preferred solvents are alcohols with carbon chain length from C10 to C20. Branched alcohols are preferred, e.g. ISOFOL 12 or ISALCHEM 123 from SASOL Performance Chemicals. Linear alcohols can be used by blending with branched ones.

The composition contains 60-90% LAS alkanolamonium salts and 10-40% of alcohol solvent.

USE AND APPLICATIONS

The concentrated alkylbenzene sulfonate alkanolamonium salt containing fatty alcohols can be used as main emulsifier in emulsifiable oils used to produce metalworking fluids.
